It is a different game entirely from Namco Classic Collection Volume 2's Dig Dug Arrangement but still has the concept of being an updated variant of Dig Dug by having new graphics, obstacles, enemies, boss battles, power-ups, etc. In 2005, Namco made another game with the Dig Dug Arrangement title as part of Namco Museum Battle Collection. In this version of Dig Dug, there are new marbles that can kill a lot of enemies in a row but too many "ayiie!" screams from marbles killing ice dragons, ducks or aliens can result in enemies disappearing for a short amount of time. There are also new features such as giant rocks that can crush multiple enemies at a time and special power-up items.ĭig Dug Arrangement was re-released alongside this game and ten others in the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox versions of Namco Museum. The graphics are updated and the levels are different. Out of the six created Arrangement games, this version has the least amount of changes. The updated variant was called Dig Dug Arrangement, with one or two-player modes, as in the original. ![]() Hosted by 44 Bytes. In 1996, Namco packaged both this game and an updated variant and re-released it in arcades with the title Namco Classic Collection Vol. © 2022 Hookshot Media, partner of ReedPop. Overall it can feel repetitive though, with only two enemy types and nothing to strive for apart from a better score, and the go-anywhere playing field actually makes it feel ironically barren compared to the restricted play areas of Pac-Man and Galaga. The fact that different methods of killing enemies can result in different scores can make for some interesting strategies that need to evolve on the fly. Regardless, Dig Dug is still worth a play, especially for older gamers who remember it fondly. Of course the D-pad is there to eliminate the problem, but for those who find its positioning uncomfortable, that can be disappointing. Unlike Pac-Man which locks you into a rigid maze, Dig Dug lets you change directions whenever you like, and sliding your thumb around the circle pad can sometimes cause Dig Dug to take a fatal detour into a direction you didn't intend. The circle pad isn't quite suited to a game like Dig Dug, which lets you move in any direction at any time. You can use the restore points to cheat the game, certainly, but there's no value in doing so, and no other real reason to use them.īut where the 3DS does happen to introduce a small problem of its own is the controls. In the latter, however, it suffers from the same fate as any score-attack game: there's really no need to them, as the entire point of the game in the first place is to measure your skill. ![]() In the former category it gets full marks, as Dig Dug is exactly the kind of game that's best in small doses on the go. In fact, in one case, it can even be seen as a liability.įor starters, the main features of a 3DS re-release are always going to be the portability factor and the restore points. ![]() You can either play alone or alternate with a friend, which is nice, but the 3DS Virtual Console version doesn't really add much in the way of unique value. The NES port is extremely faithful to the arcade original, with its simple fun translating very well.
